Tasting notes

The 1685 Sauvignon Blanc from Boschendal Winery pours into the glass with a straw-yellow color.

On the nose, it reveals an abundance of tropical fruit aromas with notes of lime and green fig.

This Sauvignon Blanc from Boschendal indulges the palate with flavors of herbs and tropical fruits, with a hint of lime and green fig. It maintains an excellent balance between acidity and structure.

The 1685 Sauvignon Blanc can be aged for up to 5 years.

Sauvignon Blanc grape variety

The grape variety Sauvignon Blanc is a natural cross between the Traminer and Chenin Blanc grape varieties. Hence, its name is believed to be derived from the French word "sauvage," which means "wild" in English. The exact origin of the Sauvignon Blanc grape is not documented. It was first mentioned in records in the early 18th century in southwestern France.

The mineral acidity and its susceptibility to weather make Sauvignon Blanc perfect for cultivation in South Africa. In South Africa, Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most widely planted white grape varieties.

Depending on the ripeness of the grapes, different aroma profiles emerge. Traditionally produced, Sauvignon Blanc is known for citrus and gooseberry notes. However, vegetal notes such as freshly cut grass are often found in Sauvignon Blanc wines as well. In the case of an early harvest, Sauvignon Blanc grapes often yield aromas of tropical fruits and peach.

Generally, Sauvignon Blanc is fermented dry, and it rarely undergoes aging in oak barrels. The primary reason for this is its historical association. Sauvignon Blanc has always been known for its freshness and relatively lean body.
