Pinot Grigio grape variety
Pinot Grigio is one of the world’s best-known white wine grape varieties. Originally from France, where it was known as Pinot Gris, the variety became especially popular in northern Italy, where it developed its fresh, straightforward style. Today, Pinot Grigio is grown in many wine regions and impresses with its versatility, from light aperitif wines to more structured food-friendly styles.
In South Africa, Pinot Grigio has a clear, fruit-forward profile. Abundant sunshine and maritime influence keep the grapes healthy while ensuring ample freshness. On limestone- and granite-rich soils, precise, elegant wines with a fine texture and good tension are produced.
Typical aromas range from citrus and green apple to white pear, floral notes and a subtle mineral character. Depending on how it is aged, Pinot Grigio can be crisp and focused, with cool fruit and lively acidity when aged in stainless steel, or gain a rounder texture from brief oak ageing, adding hints of vanilla, almonds and delicate caramel. While very ripe, broad styles were occasionally found in the past, many producers today favour a more balanced interpretation focused on freshness, varietal character and elegance.
