Winery Glen Carlou
The Winery Glen Carlou is a renowned and respected Winery located in the picturesque Paarl wine region of South Africa. Since its founding in 1985, it has earned a reputation for high-quality wines and is known for its variety of excellent grape varieties.
The location of the Winery at the foot of the Simonsberg Mountains offers ideal climatic conditions and a diverse range of soils, enabling the cultivation of a wide range of wines. Glen Carlou pursues a sustainable and environmentally conscious viticulture philosophy, with the vines carefully tended and the natural resources of the terroir respected.
Glen Carlou produces a variety of wines, including premium red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir, as well as outstanding white wines such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Each wine reflects the characteristics of the terroir and shows an impressive balance, depth, and elegance.
Tasting notes
The Chardonnay from Winery Glen Carlou is characterized by a balanced complexity as well as intense fruit aromas. On the nose and palate, pronounced fresh citrus notes as well as aromas of green apple and pear are evident. A long and elegant finish is supported by a gentle acidity and fine tannins.
The barrels made from French oak, which have been treated using the water bending method, prepare the oak wood for toasting in such a way that a softer mouthfeel is created when tasting the Chardonnay from Glen Carlou.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
