Ken Forrester Wines
The Ken Forrester Winery, founded 1993, is famous for its outstanding achievements in winemaking, particularly for its Chenin Blanc, which earned its founder Ken Forrester the nickname “King of Chenin.” Located in the renowned Stellenbosch wine region , the winery has built an excellent reputation for its high-quality wines, which reflect the region’s unique terroir.
Alongside its award-winning Chenin Blanc, the winery also delights with other grape varieties such as fruity Sauvignon Blanc and elegant Chardonnay. The portfolio is rounded out by red wines, including spicy Shiraz and characterful Merlot.
Particularly noteworthy are the highly acclaimed Rhône-style blends, which underscore the winery’s passion and commitment to exceptional quality.

The Gypsy from Ken Forrester is a wild and spicy, layered Rhône blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Syrah. Highly concentrated and deeply expressive, it ranks among Stellenbosch’s top red wines.
Intense aromas of wild red berries dominate the nose, accompanied by cinnamon, nutmeg, dark spice notes and a subtle hint of vanilla — an almost mystical impression. On the palate, velvety tannins lead to a long, spicy finish.
The grapes were hand-harvested and selected several times. After cool pre-fermentation maceration, the wine matured for 12 months in old French barriques, was selected again, then spent a further 12 months ageing in wood — around 24 months of barrique ageing in total. A statement wine with captivating density and excellent ageing potential.

Grenache and Syrah
In this cuvée, the red fruit of Grenache blends with the dark berries and pepper notes of Syrah. Grenache often contributes ripe raspberry and cherry aromas, warmth and a rounded body, with relatively mild acidity and soft tannins. Syrah adds depth of colour, firmer tannins and usually fresher acidity. The result is a fruit-forward, spicy red winewhose richness is balanced by structure. Syrah’s tannin structure can support ageing potential; grape quality and ageing remain key.
This pairing is typical of the southern Rhône and Languedoc, as well as Australian red blends. In the glass, it is usually a deep ruby red, occasionally with violet hues. The style ranges from juicy and approachable to full-bodied and age-worthy; with age, leathery and earthy notes may develop. It pairs well with dishes such as braised meat or spiced vegetable dishes.
