Winery Vergelegen
The Winery Vergelegen is a renowned Winery in South Africa and is one of the best-known and oldest Wineries in the Stellenbosch region. It is located about 40 kilometers east of Cape Town and stretches over a picturesque landscape with gentle hills and lush vineyards. The history of Vergelegen dates back to the 17th century when it was founded by Dutch settlers. Over time, the Winery changed owners several times, but since the late 20th century it has been owned by the Anglo American Corporation, which places great value on preserving the historic buildings and further developing wine production. The climate in Stellenbosch is ideal for viticulture, and Vergelegen benefits from the cool sea breezes of the Atlantic and the warm sunshine, which provide optimal conditions for growing quality vines. The vineyards are mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, and Chardonnay, and the Winemakers of Vergelegen produce a variety of award-winning wines characterized by their elegance, complexity, and balance.
Tasting notes
The Vergelegen Chardonnay Reserve Range is a true masterpiece of winemaking. This white wine presents itself with an elegant, golden-yellow color and already exudes enticing aromas of citrus fruits, apricot, and pineapple at first impression. The nose is accompanied by a subtle oak note that underscores its complexity.
On the palate, this Chardonnay reveals its true greatness. The citrus fruits dance on the tongue, accompanied by the sweet fullness of apricots and the tropical freshness of pineapple. This wine displays a remarkable balance between fruitiness and a subtle, well-integrated oak spice.
The finish is long-lasting and leaves a hint of fresh citrus notes and a subtle touch of vanilla, which comes from the time spent in French oak barrels. The acidity structure is perfectly balanced, giving the wine a vibrant freshness.
This Vergelegen Chardonnay Reserve Range is a prime example of precision and sophistication in winemaking. Its elaborate production, including yeast aging and regular batonnage, has resulted in a wine of exceptional quality.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
