Winery Rickety Bridge
The Rickety Bridge Wine Estate, located in Franschhoek on the slopes of the Dassenberg, is known for its high-quality Franschhoek wines.
Under the leadership of Winemaker Wynand Grobler, the Winery has offered an exclusive wine selection since its establishment in 1797.
Originally part of the La Provence farm, it was only operated under the name Rickety Bridge in the 1990s. The Winery has made significant investments in modern winemaking techniques and has a renovated wine cellar, which now serves exclusively as storage for the wooden barrels used during fermentation. The flagship range "Paulina's Reserve," named after the former owner Paulina de Villiers, is internationally recognized.
Tasting notes
The Rickety Bridge Shiraz is a expressive red wine that perfectly captures the depth and complexity of Shiraz. In the glass, it presents a deep ruby red color that immediately catches the eye. The nose is dominated by bold aromas of dark fruits like blackberries and black cherries, complemented by subtle notes of black pepper and a hint of toasted wood, indicating careful aging in oak barrels.
On the palate, the Rickety Bridge Shiraz 2020 reveals an impressive structure with well-integrated tannins that provide a velvety texture. The fruity aromas are complemented by hints of dark Chocolate and a subtle touch of vanilla, giving the wine a pleasant complexity. The finish is long and spicy, with a lingering echo of dark fruits and a fine spiciness that rounds off the wine and invites the next sip.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
