Pinot Noir from the Cape: Elegance in Red and Bubbles

Pinot Noir, the noble diva of grape varieties, feels right at home in the cooler corners of South Africa. It rewards the winemakers with wines that fascinatingly bridge the gap between Old World elegance and New World fruit intensity. In our collection of around 70 wines from over 20 wineries, you can see just how versatile this grape can be: as a classic red wine, but especially as the base for South Africa's excellent sparkling wines.

A Spectrum of Styles: From Elegant Reds to Fine MCC

Our collection showcases the two faces of South African Pinot Noir. On one hand, the single-varietal red wine: elegant, with silky tannins and aromas of red fruits like cherry and raspberry, often with underlying earthy notes. It's a lighter, more finessed alternative to the country's robust Cabernet Sauvignons or Pinotages. On the other hand – and this is a Cape specialty – Pinot Noir plays the leading role in Méthode Cap Classique (MCC). In these sparkling wines made using the traditional method, it provides structure, complexity, and fine bubbles, often in harmony with Chardonnay. Many of our top wines from estates like Haute Cabrière or Le Lude are outstanding examples of Brut or Rosé MCCs.

Cool Sites, Great Wines: The Best Regions

Top-quality Pinot Noir requires a cool climate. In South Africa, the best sites are found near the coast, where the cool breeze from the Atlantic provides the necessary freshness. The Franschhoek region is an absolute hotspot, as our selection proves with many wines from local producers like Boschendal or Haute Cabrière. The terroir here yields particularly elegant and structured wines. But other areas in the Coastal Region, such as Stellenbosch, also have excellent sites for Pinot Noir that produce wines with their own unique character.

Your Perfect Partner: Pinot Noir & Food

Pinot Noir is a culinary multi-talent. A still red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted poultry like duck, mushroom dishes, risotto, or salmon. An MCC is the perfect aperitif but also goes brilliantly with oysters, seafood, and light appetisers. A Rosé MCC is not only a visual highlight but also a great companion to summer salads or grilled fish.

For Every Occasion and Budget

You can start exploring the world of South African Pinot Noir for a small price. We offer entry-level wines starting from around €13. The vast majority of excellent wines, including many highly acclaimed MCCs, are in the €20 to €35 range. For very special moments, we also carry absolute icons and rare top wines that are significantly higher in price and demonstrate the enormous potential of this grape variety at the Cape.

Frequently asked questions

What makes South African Pinot Noir so special?

It's the combination of Old World elegance and New World fruit. South African Pinot Noir from cool climates is very versatile, producing both fine red wines and first-class sparkling wines (MCC).

What exactly is MCC?

MCC stands for Méthode Cap Classique. It is the term for South African premium sparkling wines made in the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle – just like Champagne. Pinot Noir is one of the most important grape varieties used.

What food pairs well with Pinot Noir?

Still Pinot Noir pairs excellently with duck, mushroom dishes, and salmon. As a sparkling wine (MCC), it's an ideal aperitif and a great match for oysters and seafood. Rosé versions go well with light salads.

Is Pinot Noir from South Africa always a red wine?

Not at all! Almost half of our Pinot Noir collection consists of sparkling wines (MCC), for which the grape is pressed white (blanc de noirs) or used for rosé. It also exists as a still rosé wine.
