Located to the east of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek is officially classified as a ward in the wine-rich district of Paarl. However, Franschhoek has its own character that comes with a lot of charm. Due to its special location surrounded by mountains, Franschhoek has a cooler and rainier climate with an average rainfall of 122 mm per year.

WEINHOCHBURG FRANSCHHOEK

With almost two dozen wineries, Franschhoek (French Corner) is undoubtedly a Mecca for wine enthusiasts in South Africa. Large and small, new and old wineries lie fence by fence here. However, anyone who thinks that peace will be lost or that one stone is like the next is very much mistaken. Each of the wineries has its own exciting history and competes for the prize of greatest charm. The small dreamy place near the big brother Stellenbosch is impressive. Renowned wineries such as La Motte and Plaisir de Merle, but also small boutique wineries such as Black Elephant, which incidentally only opens its doors by appointment, create their world-famous wines here.

OUR SECRET TIP

If you've looked too deeply into the glass too often and want to take a different look at Franschhoek, it's best to take the Lambrechts Road R45 up Mont Rochelle - while sober, of course. From up here you have an outstanding view of the valley and the numerous wineries and can mentally plan your next liquid stopovers.

SIGHTSEEING ATTRACTIONS

With the diversity of wineries and the sheer number of wines, it's hard to imagine having time for anything else. If you still manage to sip all your wine supplies, are already seeing red or simply need a little break from Chenin and his colleague Sauvignon, Franschhoek offers the right change. Antonji Rupert, to whom the matter lies Winery Ruperts Winefarm belongs, im Motor Museum  (L'Ormarins, Franschhoek 7690) in four halls its numerous classic car treasures. For R80 you can admire rare rarities from the brands Ferrari, Maserati, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Mercedes and various American classics. Fun for young and old is pre-programmed here thanks to the family atmosphere. Another pastime that doesn't involve drinking - unless you're being dragged along by your art-loving friends - is the Franschhoek Art Museum (52 Hugenote Street, Franschhoek 7690). Paintings, jewelery and funny sculptures seek their way into the hearts of visitors and ultimately into a new home.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

By far the best transportation choice is to hire a car for the Franschhoek wine region excursion along the N1 or from one of the many car rental companies in Cape Town (e.g. Avis: 123 Strand St, Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town, 8001). The prerequisites for this are above all a normal driving license and an empty liver. If you consume alcohol, you are quickly taken out of circulation and even risk being in prison, and there is certainly no wine cellar that you would trust such a unique wine nation to be able to do - so it is better to spit out the good drop again, no matter how difficult it is.

HOW LONG WILL I STAY?

A single day is not enough for the huge range of great wineries. If you want to feel the full Franschhoek feeling, it is best to stay for a long weekend and, if possible, combine your stay with a wine-rich visit to Stellenbosch. You can find more details about Stellenbosch in one of the next blog posts about Stellenbosch. Opportunities to sleep off your well-deserved rush range from backpacker lodges and hotels to dreamlike rooms right on the wineries. With the latter, you will be woken up with a balanced breakfast accompanied by a refreshing sparkling wine and will not even be able to enjoy a hangover that, as we all know, you only get from bad wine anyway.

  • Geil! Wir waren auf den meisten Weigütern dort schon. Wollen aber bei nächster Gelegenheit wieder dort hin. Am Liebsten mit einer gleichgesinnten Gruppe Weinbegeisterter……
