Idiom

Idiom has embodied the Bottega family’s passion for exquisite wines in the wine region Stellenbosch, South Africa, since 1999. Picturesquely situated on the upper slopes of the Helderberg, the winery enjoys breathtaking views of False Bay and benefits from unique microclimates shaped by its proximity to the sea and the surrounding mountains. The philosophy of Idiom is to make the most of the terroir and bring out the distinctive characteristics of each grape variety.

Under the direction of cellar master Roberto Bottega , an impressive variety of grapes is grown. Alongside classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the portfolio also includes Pinotage and Shiraz . This diversity is reflected in the experimental yet terroir-driven wines, regularly celebrated for their personality and sense of place.

Idiom is synonymous with innovative winemaking, with every drop reflecting the dedication and expertise of the Roberto Bottega team. The wines are an expression of exceptional winemaking and embody South Africa’s rich winemaking tradition.

Barbera grape variety

Barbera comes from Piedmont and is known for its juicy fruit and lively acidity. Typical aromas include red cherry, plum, violet and a hint of spice. On the palate, Barbera is medium-bodied with low to moderate tannins, making it especially inviting to drink. Aged in stainless steel, it shows bright freshness and precise fruit; a short period in oak adds delicate notes of cedar, cocoa and greater depth. In Stellenbosch, Barbera combines ripe red fruit with good tension and a long, juicy finish. It pairs versatilely with Italian cuisine, ragù, Pizza Funghi, grilled meat and mushroom dishes.
