Icon Winery Old Road Wine Co. Winery

Old Road Wine Estate

The estate Old Road Wine Company opened in December 2018 and has enjoyed high recognition among wine enthusiasts in South Africa since day one. The estate, located between the railway line and the old main road, offers visitors a 180-degree view of the massive Franschhoek mountain range.

It all began on the so-called "Old Road". This road not only tells the story of a winery and its vineyards but also of an extraordinary town, Franschhoek, and the historical figures who shaped it. The Old Road Wine Company estate is especially known for its fine white wines and full-bodied red wines.

Winemaker: Ryan Puttick

Ryan Puttick, winemaker at Old Road Wine Co., grew up on a farm in a remote corner of the Northern Cape. He believes wine has the ability to tell a story and bring people together. Wines with character and endurance. That’s what attracted him to Old Road Wine Co. A winery that has managed to excite many wine enthusiasts in a short period with exceptional wines, while telling fascinating stories of local legends.

You can also meet Ryan in our online tastings with Franschhoek Cellar or Old Road Wine Co.

This elegant red wine shows beautiful nuances of spices as well as an elegant minerality. It offers an exceptional freshness, combined with a strong fruit intensity.

The Elgin Pinot Noir 2018 from Old Road Wine Co. already drinks excellently now but promises great aging potential of up to 15 years.

Grape variety Pinot Noir

The grape variety Pinot Noir is one of the oldest grape varieties in the world. Pinot Noir has a two-thousand-year-old history and originates from Burgundy in France. The grape variety is mostly grown there on very mineral-rich soils.

Due to the high complexity in producing excellent Pinot Noir wines, this grape variety has made a big name for itself in recent years. Meanwhile, Pinot Noir enjoys high international demand. The grape variety is now grown in various countries such as South Africa, Australia, Spain, and also in Germany. In Germany, the grape variety Pinot Noir is often referred to as Spätburgunder or Blauburgunder.

The grape variety Pinot Noir has gained great fame especially through its use, alongside the grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, in Champagne production.

Although the grape variety Pinot Noir is not among the strongest red wine grape varieties, it is characterized by a complex flavor profile and elegant complexity. The color profile usually shows somewhat lighter red tones.

The aromas of Pinot Noir range from strawberry through plum to cherry and can also show intense, spicy notes like pepper and herbs from wine to wine.
