Old Road Wine
The Old Road Wine Company was founded in the heart of the Franschhoek-valley in South Africa. The winery pursues the vision of creating wines that reflect both the rich history and the unique terroir of this renowned wine region. A special focus is on producing quality wines that express the valley’s distinctive climate and soils.
Known for its diverse grape varieties, these are carefully selected and cultivated. Among the standout varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, which highlight the quality of the white wines. For its red wines, in particular Pinotage, Shiraz and Pinot Noir.
The Old Road Wine Company combines tradition with modern winemaking techniques to deliver wines with character and finesse.
The original series of Old Road Wine Co. commemorates the stories of the legendary characters who shaped the Franschhoek community in its early years. Rough appearances aside, the humble axe becomes an instrument of refinement in the skilled hands of the skilled butcher. Similar to that Winemaker have expanded their capabilities with this cape blend.
The components from which this artisan Cape blend is made are Shiraz (60%), Pinotage (30%) and Mourvèdre (10%). The Shiraz comes from Stellenbosch with a few casks from Paarl and Pinotage all from Stellenbosch. All vineyards are planted on weathered granite soils that add intensity and layered structure. The Mourvèdre is a 16-year-old bush vineyard in Agter Paarl. Mourvèdre is perfect for growing bush vines as it gives the wine more body and weight compared to trellis vines. In the cellar, this mixture is carefully treated in oak for 14 months, half in new and the other in 2nd and 3rd fillings. The result is a big, powerful and expressive wine with strong aromas of dark red fruits and Blackberry, as well as aromas, cigar boxes with cinnamon and spices on the nose. A great accompaniment to grilled beef, mutton or game.
Generally a must for meat.

Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
