De Grendel Wine Estate
The family Winery De Grendel in the Durbanville Hills has a rich history dating back to 1720 and was revived as a winery in 2000. Owned by the Graaff family, it enjoys a picturesque view of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean.
As the flagship grape variety, the Sauvignon Blanc, which finds ideal conditions here, shines. The winery impresses with a variety of elegant, classic wines that reflect the terroir.
De Grendel is a founding member of the Durbanville Wine Valley Association and actively supports the development of regional winegrowing.
Translation missing: en.Tasting notes
The Rubaiyat from Winery De Grendel has a mildly spicy aroma with hints of roasted black olives, wild fynbos, red berries and black plums.
The palate is clean and rich, with excellent concentration and intensity. The tannins are finely structured, leading to a full-bodied wine with a long-lasting finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Dark fruit, spice and firm tannins come together in this cuvée .Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot often bring aromas of blackcurrants and plums: the former provides tannic structure, while the latter adds body and a smooth core of fruit. Petit Verdot can enhance the colour, acidity and spicy depth; Cabernet Franc often adds herbaceous notes and freshness. Together, they create a balance of body, firm structure and lively acidity.
The varieties are particularly associated with Bordeaux but are also blended in places such as California, Chile and South Africa . The combination alone does not determine the wine’s origin. Depending on the climate and ageing, the style can range from firm and herbaceous to ripe and full-bodied. In the glass, it usually shows a deep ruby colour with violet highlights.
It pairs well with quickly seared or braised meat, hearty vegetable dishes and aged cheese.
