Tasting Note

The Saxenburg red wine Diamond Hill 2022 shows a violet sheen and opens with freshly crushed black pepper and warm spice notes such as cinnamon. Behind these, red cherry and dark berries develop, adding depth to the aroma. A subtle hint of rooibos underscores the spicy, fruity aromas. On the palate, the wine is supple and approachable, with juicy fruit and tannins. The finish lingers with a spicy pepper note and a hint of star anise

Composition:

 100% Syrah

Syrah grape variety

Syrah is one of the world’s great classic red wine varieties. It originated in the northern Rhône Valley in France, but is now grown on every continent. In Australia, Syrah is known as Shiraz; in South Africa, the variety defines many of the country’s most distinctive red wines.

Syrah displays an impressive diversity of styles. Its aromas range from black pepper, violets and dark berries to olives and smoke. Depending on its origin, Syrah can be cool and fresh or rich and ripe, while almost always remaining spicy, structured and centred on clear fruit.

This grape variety is a real team player and is often used in blends, for example with Grenache and Mourvèdre. At the same time, Syrah shines as a varietal wine, ranging from juicy and easy-drinking to complex and age-worthy. Rosé and sparkling wines made from Syrah are also possible.

Syrah is historically considered an ancient Rhône variety; genetic studies identify Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche as its parents. From France, it spread throughout the New World and as far as Australia, where Shiraz became synonymous with opulent, powerful red wines. Today, Syrah stands for diversity, varietal character and excellent ageing potential.

Tasting Note Wine and Food Pairing

This Syrah pairs beautifully with grilled or quickly seared beef and lamb, where its peppery spice and dark fruit echo the charred flavours. Iberian inspired dishes like jamón, grilled chorizo or grilled pork are equally well suited. With herb-seasoned poultry – thyme or rosemary, for example – it brings freshness and structure. Herb-infused stews and braised dishes benefit from its warm spice notes. Spicy vegetarian dishes with mushrooms or aubergine work very well too.
