Pongrácz
The story of Winery Pongrácz is inseparably tied to the life of Desiderius Pongrácz , a Hungarian count who found a new home in South Africa after the Second World War. In the Stellenbosch wine region he shaped the South African wine industry from 1973 onward as Chief Viticultural Adviser for the Distillers Corporation. He championed the introduction and spread of noble grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir , and he revolutionized wine-growing practices by insisting on careful selection of high-quality plant material.
Desiderius Pongrácz's vision was to improve the quality and diversity of the grape varieties grown in South Africa. His commitment led to the modernization of viticulture and laid the foundation for the reputation of South African wines today. He documented his expertise in his standard work “Practical Viticulture”.
The Pongrácz Winery honors his legacy by dedicating itself to producing sparkling wines using the traditional method, the Méthode Cap Classique, mainly composed of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are a testament to his tireless dedication to quality and innovation in South African winemaking.

The MCC Brut from Pongrácz Winery is made from the two Champagne grape varieties, Pinot Noir (60%) and Chardonnay (40%). On the nose, it presents notes of green apple and citrus. The Pongrácz MCC Brut charms the palate with delicate yeasty notes intermingling with freshly baked bread and ripe fruits.
It offers a delightful creamy mouthful of blackberry fruit flavors with a lingering finish. The 4 Platter Stars award does justice to its exceptional quality. The MCC Brut from Pongrácz stands as a flagship among Cap Classiques.

Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
