Idiom
Idiom has embodied the Bottega family’s passion for exquisite wines in the wine region Stellenbosch, South Africa, since 1999. Picturesquely situated on the upper slopes of the Helderberg, the winery enjoys breathtaking views of False Bay and benefits from unique microclimates shaped by its proximity to the sea and the surrounding mountains. The philosophy of Idiom is to make the most of the terroir and bring out the distinctive characteristics of each grape variety.
Under the direction of cellar master Roberto Bottega , an impressive variety of grapes is grown. Alongside classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the portfolio also includes Pinotage and Shiraz . This diversity is reflected in the experimental yet terroir-driven wines, regularly celebrated for their personality and sense of place.
Idiom is synonymous with innovative winemaking, with every drop reflecting the dedication and expertise of the Roberto Bottega team. The wines are an expression of exceptional winemaking and embody South Africa’s rich winemaking tradition.
In the glass, the wine displays a delicate pink to coral hue. The nose is expressive and aromatic, revealing sweet pink floral notes underpinned by fresh strawberry. On the palate, it is fresh and lively, supported by bright acidity and a pleasant mineral edge. Orange blossom and red raspberry aromas unfold gracefully, leading to a clean, refreshing finish.
Vinification: Harvested at optimal ripeness of 22° Balling, the grapes were pressed as whole bunches with minimal extraction, allowing around two hours of gentle skin contact to achieve the wine’s delicate colour and aromatic purity. Fermentation and ageing took place in stainless steel tanks, where the wine spent six months on fine lees to preserve its freshness while enhancing its texture and aromatic complexity.

Grenache Noir
Grenache Noir often produces fruit-forward red wines when made as a varietal, with aromas of strawberry, raspberry and ripe cherry, complemented by spicy or herbal notes. They are usually ruby red and relatively translucent in the glass. They typically have mild to moderate acidity, fairly supple tannins and a rounded mouthfeel. In warm locations, alcohol and body can be pronounced; cooler sites and earlier harvesting encourage fresher, lighter styles.
Important regions of origin include the southern Rhône, Roussillon, Spain, South Africa and Sardinia. The stylistic range extends from juicy, approachable wines to full-bodied, spicy styles with denser structure. Ripe grapes can also show hints of dried fruit, while oak ageing can add further spice notes. The variety pairs well with grilled vegetables, stews or mildly seasoned meat.
