English: Artelium Spanish: Artelium Dutch: Artelium French: Artelium
Artelium is an English wine producer founded by Julie Bretland and Mark Collins with the vision to craft exceptional wines while promoting art and craftsmanship. The winery sees itself not only as a winemaking business, but as a place where creativity, craftsmanship, and collaboration come together. The couple has joined forces with well-known winemakers Dermot Sugrue and Owen Elias to bring their vision to life, with a focus on producing outstanding still and sparkling wines that reflect the character of each vintage and each vineyard parcel.
Artelium’s philosophy is defined by an innovative approach that values the freedom of England’s wine regions, unrestrained by the traditional rules of the Old World. This allows the winemakers to develop forward-looking wine styles and fully unleash their creativity. The winery grows classic grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, as well as PIWI varieties (fungus-resistant vines) to meet its commitment to sustainability. In addition to wine production, Artelium is also a cultural hub, offering art exhibitions, wine seminars, workshops, and other events to bring the community together and celebrate the connection between wine and art.
Artelium’s terroir spans two vineyards in Sussex. The larger Madehurst Vineyard covers 45 acres and is located within the South Downs National Park. This site is rich in chalky soils, which are ideal for producing high-quality sparkling wines. Planting took place in 2019 and 2020, and the first vintage was produced in 2022. The Streat Vineyard extends across 20 acres with clay soils and a similar variety of grape types. These two locations offer different growing conditions, giving the winemakers the opportunity to create expressive wines that reflect the character of each vineyard. Artelium uses a blend of Champagne, Burgundy, and Alsace clones to create both still and sparkling wines with a unique character.

The Artelium Chardonnay 2023 shows a clear, vibrant nose with fresh aromas of citrus fruits and green fruit like apple and pear. Subtler nuances of beeswax and chamomile add a fine, elegant depth to the bouquet. The body is medium-weight and fresh, the finish long and focused – a style that shows both energy and clarity.

Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
