Syrah & Shiraz - origin of the grape variety

The origin of Grape variety Shiraz (also called Syrah) goes back to a cross between the grape varieties Mondeuse Blanche and Dureza. The grape variety Shiraz originally comes from the Rhone Valley in France.

The difference between Shiraz and Syrah lies solely in the name of the origin. In countries such as South Africa and Australia, which are also referred to as “New World” wine regions, the grape variety is often referred to as Shiraz. In Old World wine regions such as France and Italy, the grape variety is often referred to as Syrah. The Winemaker also use the different names to convey the style of the wine.

Shiraz and Syrah Wines from South Africa

The Shiraz grapes grow best in a very warm climate. This gives them one full character and distinct fruit flavors. South Africa is therefore an ideal growing area for Shiraz and Syrah. The country offers optimal conditions for wine growing. As in many regions of the world, the Shiraz grape variety is also very popular in South Africa. Shiraz and Syrah wines are often planted in the Paarl and Stellenbosch regions because of the optimal conditions here.

Shiraz and Syrah wines - smell and taste

Depending on the origin of the wine, the grapes are made from the Syrah or Shiraz grape variety Aged in the Winery two different styles. These differ significantly from each other in both smell and taste.

The Shiraz wines have a very fruity taste with aromas of cherries and plums. In addition, aromas are darker Chocolate typical of Shiraz wines.

The Syrah wines have a rather slim and elegant character. In addition, Syrah wines are characterized by a spicy taste. Syrah wines also often have typical aromas such as cloves, cinnamon, pepper, forest floor or leather.

Both wine styles are characterized by complex aromas and a classy character.
