From Paarl in South Africa, Glen Carlou makes a real statement with this 2018 Malbec. Spontaneously fermented with wild yeasts in an open fermenter using pure free-run juice, the wine was aged in French oak for 26 months after cold maceration, then further aged in bottle. The result is an extraordinarily concentrated powerhouse that radiates pure depth and warmth. It opens with opulent fruit on the nose: ripe cassis, juicy plums and black cherries meet cedarwood and delicate smoke. These are joined by hints of dark Chocolate, tobacco and eucalyptus, subtly underpinned by liquorice and freshly ground black pepper. Dry on the palate and exceptionally powerful at 15% alcohol, it remains focused thanks to a harmonious thread of acidity. Its firm, tightly knit tannins coat the mouth with velvety softness, carrying the bittersweet dark Chocolate through to an endlessly long, warm, spicy finish.
