High up in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just five kilometres from the cool Atlantic Ocean, the vines of Hasher Family Wines are rooted in weathered granite and quartzite. The 2023 Ernest Pinot Noir brings this maritime freshness to the glass with 13% ABV and pure energy. This is cool-climate terroir expression in its purest form, perfectly capturing the vibrant elegance of the Cape’s finest sites. In the glass, it shines a lively ruby red and immediately entices you with a layered aromatic profile. Juicy wild strawberry and sour cherry meet delicate notes of Earl Grey and spicy fynbos, while the eleven-month Ausbau in 228-litre barriques, 27% of which were new oak, adds a fine, unobtrusive spiciness. On the palate, the wine starts wonderfully silky, but quickly reveals its character with fine-grained tannins, sour cherry and fresh pomegranate. Lively acidity of 5.68 g/l, combined with an almost dry profile, drives the flow of the wine and leads into a pleasantly grippy, mineral finish.
