Winery Old Road Wine
The Winery Old Road Wine Company was opened in December 2018 and has enjoyed high recognition among wine lovers in South Africa from day one. The Winery, which is located between the railway line and the old main road, offers its visitors a 180-degree view of the massive Franschhoek mountain range. On the so-called "Old Road" everything began. The road not only tells the story of a Winery and its vineyards, but also of an extraordinary town, Franschhoek, and the historical figures who shaped it. The Winery Old Road Wine Company is especially known for its noble white wines and its full-bodied red wines.
Tasting notes
The Fat Man Pinotage from the Winery Old Road Wine Co. is reminiscent, like all the wines of the winery, of the legendary characters that shaped the Franschhoek community in its early years.
The Fat Man was an institution at the local station in Franschhoek. He welcomed new and familiar faces upon arrival with a friendly smile. He was always accompanied by his faithful dog.
This fascinating Pinotage leaves an equally unforgettable impression with layers of juicy red fruits, spices, and smooth tannins. Additionally, one can discover notes of Chocolate, oregano, and plums. The Fat Man Pinotage from the Winery Old Road Wine Co. boasts a full-bodied character and impresses with a long-lasting finish.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
