Winery Vergelegen
The Winery Vergelegen is a renowned Winery in South Africa and is one of the best-known and oldest Wineries in the Stellenbosch region. It is located about 40 kilometers east of Cape Town and stretches over a picturesque landscape with gentle hills and lush vineyards. The history of Vergelegen dates back to the 17th century when it was founded by Dutch settlers. Over time, the Winery changed owners several times, but since the late 20th century it has been owned by the Anglo American Corporation, which places great value on preserving the historic buildings and further developing wine production. The climate in Stellenbosch is ideal for viticulture, and Vergelegen benefits from the cool sea breezes of the Atlantic and the warm sunshine, which provide optimal conditions for growing quality vines. The vineyards are mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, and Chardonnay, and the Winemakers of Vergelegen produce a variety of award-winning wines characterized by their elegance, complexity, and balance.
Tasting notes
The Semillon Straw White presents itself with a clear, pale straw color and light green reflections, which are visually appealing. Its bouquet reveals an intense presence of ripe grapefruit aromas, accompanied by fine herbal nuances and a hint of tropical fruits.
In the nose, there are ripe, tropical fruits, but on the palate, the wine becomes interesting with a wonderful acidity and freshness. Serve it well chilled at 8-10 degrees Celsius.
The grapes were either dried on the vines or on wooden pallets. The processing began as soon as a sufficient sugar concentration was reached. The grapes were not crushed or destemmed, but fermented on the skins in plastic containers. This helped to break down the cell tissue and release a bit more juice. The fermenting, sweet juice was transferred to old barrels at the end of the alcoholic fermentation.
The wine spent 15 months in old oak.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
