Single-varietal Sangiovese combines sour cherry and red berries with floral hints, dried herbs and occasional earthy notes. In the glass, it is usually ruby red with moderate colour depth; as it ages, garnet-red reflections may develop. Its defining features are lively acidity and pronounced, often grippy tannins. This interplay gives the wine definition and freshness, while its body and fruit expression vary depending on its origin and ageing.

Its main growing regions are in central Italy, especially Tuscany and Romagna. Styles range from straightforward, fruit-forward wines to structured, longer-aged expressions. Barrel ageing can add spicy and subtle toasty nuances; with age, notes of leather and tobacco may also emerge. It pairs well with dishes such as tomato-based dishes, roasted meat or aged cheese.
