Single-variety Sangiovese combines sour cherry and red berries with floral nuances, dried herbs and occasional earthy notes. In the glass, it usually appears ruby red with a fairly medium colour depth; as it matures, garnet-red reflections may develop. Its defining characteristics are a lively acidity and pronounced, often grippy tannin. This combination gives the wine definition and freshness, while its body and fruit expression vary depending on its origin and ageing.

Its most important growing regions are in central Italy, particularly in Tuscany and Romagna. The style ranges from straightforward, fruit-driven wines to structured, longer-aged expressions. Oak ageing can add spicy and subtle toasty nuances; with maturity, notes of leather and tobacco may sometimes emerge. It pairs well, for example, with tomato-based dishes, roast meat or mature cheese.
