Collection: Pinotage from South Africa
PINOTAGE - THE UNIQUE SOUL OF SOUTH AFRICA
Pinotage, a grape variety that originates exclusively from South Africa, significantly shapes the South African wine culture. Grown by many wineries in South Africa, Pinotage is not only produced as a single varietal but also used for blends and rosé wines.
THE CREATION OF THE PINOTAGE GRAPE VARIETY
In 1925, Professor Abraham Isak Perold crossed the grape varieties Pinot Noir and Cinsaut to lay the foundation for the unique Pinotage red wine. This historic grape variety, 'invented' by Perold, is relatively young compared to French grape varieties but of great importance to South Africa.
PINOTAGE - A SYMBOL OF SOUTH AFRICAN VITICULTURE
The naming originated from the combination of 'Pinot Noir' and the name of the grape variety Cinsault, 'Hermitage'. This resulted in the name known today: Pinotage. This unique grape variety, grown almost exclusively in South Africa, has experienced successes as well as setbacks over the years, and is considered an important symbol of South African viticulture.
PINOTAGE FROM SOUTH AFRICA - A JOURNEY THROUGH TASTE AND AROMAS
South African Pinotage wines are characterized by a fruity taste and a complex body. The intense aroma, a heritage of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, gives the wines a distinctive, full-bodied character. Renowned wineries such as Kanonkop, Diemersfontein and Beyerskloof in the Stellenbosch wine region have gained worldwide recognition with their outstanding Pinotage wines.
DIVERSITY OF FLAVORS
Pinotage wines offer a wide range of flavors, from fresh to smoky. Banana, plum, and tropical fruits are common flavor profiles. A unique style is the 'Coffee Pinotage,' where chocolate and coffee aromas are enhanced by aging in wooden barrels. A notable example is The Chocolate Block Pinotage.
