Wine guideIdiom: Europe's Classics, Interpreted in South Africa
The Winery & Terroir
The Idiom winery is situated in one of South Africa's most spectacular locations: the upper slopes of the Helderberg mountains in Stellenbosch, with a breathtaking view over False Bay. This privileged position provides cool sea breezes that allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. Combined with the diverse, mineral-rich soils, this creates ideal conditions for cultivating a wide range of grape varieties. Idiom leverages this unique terroir to create wines of exceptional complexity, elegance, and a clear sense of place.
Wine Ranges in Our Collection
The name 'Idiom' represents the winery's philosophy: to interpret classic European grape varieties in a unique, South African way – in its own 'idiom', so to speak. The portfolio is a fascinating journey through the Old World. You'll find masterful blends like the Bordicon (inspired by Bordeaux), the Rodanico (Rhône), and the Iberico (Spain). These are complemented by impressive single-varietal wines from Italian classics such as Sangiovese, Barbera, and Zinfandel (Primitivo). The ranges are rounded out by traditional Cape Blends and Cape Reds, as well as elegant white wines like the Bianco or the single-varietal Viognier. You can also find the elegant Clifton line with its Rosé and Viognier in our shop.
Food Pairing
The diversity of Idiom wines makes them perfect food companions. The Italian-inspired red wines like Sangiovese or Barbera are, of course, an excellent match for pasta, pizza, and Mediterranean dishes. The powerful Bordicon calls for a grilled beef steak or rack of lamb. The spicy notes of the Rodanico harmonize wonderfully with stews or game. The white wines, especially the aromatic Viognier, are ideal with poultry, seafood, or even slightly spicy Asian dishes. For an authentic South African experience, try the Cape Blend with a braai (BBQ).
Price Range
You can start exploring the world of Idiom from around €13. The complex, limited-edition flagship blends, which showcase the full potential of the terroir and the cellar's artistry, are in a correspondingly higher price segment and offer outstanding value for money.
