Winery Ken Forrester
In 1993, Ken Forrester and his wife Teresa took heart to rebuild the dilapidated Winery, which was established in 1689 by Frederick Boot in Stellenbosch. Extensive renovations were carried out both in the vineyards and on the rest of the Winery. Today it bears the name Ken Forrester and is known for its exquisite wines. Located in the middle of the picturesque Stellenbosch wine region, the first-class Winery Ken Forrester lies on the slopes of the Helderberg. The Winery Ken Forrester is considered by many to be the home of Chenin Blanc. Not without reason, wines like the FMC from Ken Forrester win renowned awards every year both domestically and abroad. The premium wines from Ken Forrester are available in three different wine categories: Petit, Ken Forrester Range, and the Icon Range.
Tasting notes
The Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc from the Winery Ken Forrester comes from vines partly over 40 years old and is among the most famous Chenin Blancs of South Africa. It combines complex aromatics with a rich mouthfeel – a prime example of high-quality South African white wine.
Its complex aroma profile ranges from honeycomb, baked apple, and melon to a delicate minerality. Subtle notes of apricot and caramelized pineapple also join in.
The grapes were carefully handpicked and fermented both in stainless steel tanks and in French oak barrels. Afterwards, the wine aged 8 to 9 months on the fine lees, with about 20 % aged in new barriques. A wine with depth, elegance, and great aging potential.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
