Pongrácz Winery
Desiderius Pongrácz was a count from the Hungarian nobility. After graduating from the Hungarian Academy of Agriculture in 1944, Desiderius Pongrácz did not return to the family estate but joined the cavalry of the Hungarian army. Shortly after Hungary's surrender, he was captured by the advancing Russians. When the war finally ended, Desiderius Pongrácz was released back to Hungary. During the Hungarian uprising, he decided to flee and set his sights on Africa after securing a position as a farm manager in Namibia through his European noble connections. In 1958, he relocated to the Stellenbosch wine region, where he worked as a farm manager. During his more than 20 years of work in viticulture at the Cape, Pongrácz contributed significantly to the success of the South African wine industry through his intellect and vision. He had a major influence on the introduction and propagation of premium grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir. He understood the importance of these grape varieties for the future of the South African wine industry like no other. The Pongrácz Winery is today known worldwide as one of the leading Méthode Cap Classic producers in South Africa.
Tasting notes
The MCC Brut Rosé from the Pongrácz Winery is composed of 60% Pinot Noir, which lends it elegance, and 40% Chardonnay, providing a distinctive body and flavor. The grapes are hand-harvested from January to mid-February. After whole bunch pressing with minimal skin contact, the clear grape juice is settled before being pumped into stainless steel tanks for cold fermentation.
In the glass, this Pongrácz MCC Brut Rosé displays a delicate pink color accompanied by a very pleasant perlage. Subtle strawberry tones are complemented with a hint of baked bread. On the palate, the MCC Brut Rosé is perfectly balanced with very subtle acidity and juicy blackberry fruit.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
