Nestled in the Stellenbosch wine region, the Winery Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate is one of South Africa's oldest wineries, with origins dating back to 1696. Just a few kilometers from the sea, the vineyards benefit from cooling maritime influences that provide freshness and balance to the wines.
At the heart is the careful fusion of tradition and modern revitalization. The historic estate has been extensively restored and today pursues a clearly sustainable approach, working in harmony with nature and ensuring each grape variety grows in its optimal location.
Vergenoegd Löw thus stands for precise, terroir-driven wines that reflect Stellenbosch's terroir while bringing the winery's over-300-year history into the present.
Tasting notes
In the glass the Chardonnay displays a clear, light golden hue. On the nose it unfolds delicate aromas of green pear, accompanied by subtle citrus notes and a hint of mild spice. On the palate the wine is elegant and restrained, with fresh, well-integrated acidity and a slightly creamy texture. The combination of Aged in wood and in a concrete egg gives it additional depth and structure. On the finish it is harmonious, with delicate lemon notes and a pleasant length.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
