De Grendel Winery

De Grendel means "the latch" in Dutch. This farm was historically the gateway on the route to the inland settlements of Durbanville and Stellenbosch, which had to be opened to cross the Tygerberg, which takes its name from the leopard-like patches of vegetation on the steep hill > received. The Cape Town road passed it because in those days it was easier for ox wagons to travel over the Tygerberg than over the sandy plains of Bellville.

Winemaker: Charles Hopkins

Charles Hopkins has been with De Grendel since the early days of winemaking at the Durbanville farm in 2005, when Sir David Graaff lured him away from Graham Beck with an irresistible offer to manage winemaking and design and build his own cellar. Charles is a lifelong student of wine and even after 30 years of experience in the industry and several local and international awards, he always remains curious to learn more on his winemaking journey.

Tasting notes

The Op Die Berg Pinot Noir 2017 from the Winery De Grendel has a tempting aroma of red berries and cranberry.

On the palate, an elegant entry unfolds, with subtle aromas of strawberry and cherry, followed by spicy notes and smooth tannins. The delicious, long-lasting finish rounds off the Op Die Berg Pinot Noir 2020 from Winery De Grendel.

Grape variety Pinotage

Pinotage is the flagship of South African viticulture. The grape variety has its origin in South Africa. Even today, almost a hundred years after its creation, Pinotage is grown almost exclusively in South Africa.

Pinotage exhibits an incredible diversity. Its styles range from coffee & Chocolate to plum & banana aromas. Thus, Pinotage is a true all-rounder. This is evident in the increased use of the Pinotage grape in cuvées, blends, and also in rosé wines. Even white wines (Blanc-de-Noir) are produced from Pinotage.

The story of Pinotage begins with its creator, Prof. Abraham Izak Perold. After his professorship in 1906, Perold was sent on a mission by the government in Cape Town to search for new grape varieties.

In 1925, Perold successfully crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, which was known as Hermitage at the time. Hence the name PINO - TAGE.

Additionally, this elegant red wine pairs very well with pork, beans and chorizo.
