Winery Villa Maria Estate
The Winery Villa Maria Estate was founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich in Auckland and is now one of the best-known wineries in New Zealand. With over 4000 hectares of vineyards in Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, and Auckland, Villa Maria stands for diverse terroirs, sustainable production, and excellent quality.
As a family-run winery, Villa Maria was a pioneer in the New Zealand wine industry for decades – among other things, as one of the first to switch entirely to screw caps. Today it enjoys worldwide recognition for its iconic Sauvignon Blancs, Chardonnays, and Pinot Noirs.
The winery can be visited – a modern cellar door in Marlborough invites you to taste the many award-winning wines amidst the vines.
Tasting Notes
Villa Maria Estate Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc is a characterful white wine made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes, vinified with the utmost precision by the New Zealand Winery Villa Maria Estate. The wine impressively brings the maritime climate and vibrant style of the Marlborough region into the glass.
Already on the nose, the Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc impresses with intense aromas of passion fruit, lemongrass, and white grapefruit, complemented by fine notes of gooseberry and guava. On the palate, it is fresh and juicy, supported by a lively acidity and a clear, citrus-driven finish that provides both drinking pleasure and structure.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
