In the cool Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just five kilometres from the Southern Atlantic, Hasher Family Wines crafts a wonderfully taut, purist red wine with the Batrachella Pinotage 2023. Grown at an altitude of 210 metres along the Onrus River, the Guyot-trained vines are rooted in ancient decomposed granite over saprolitic clay with quartzite. Early hand-harvesting in the wet 2023 vintage rewards with fine phenolic ripeness and vibrant freshness. In the glass, it captivates with a deep ruby-red colour and a clear aromatic profile of juicy blackberries, blueberries and wild strawberries. Dark cacao nibs, black tea and the typical South African fynbos notes of Kooigoed and Imphepo join the fruit, lending the nose a wonderfully herbal depth. On the palate, you can sense the precision of 15 days of spontaneous fermentation in an open vat, followed by careful maturation in 228-litre French oak barrels.
