SHIRAZ & SYRAH - TWO FACES OF A FASCINATING GRAPE VARIETY
The grape variety Shiraz, also known as Syrah, was created by crossing Mondeuse Blanche and Dureza and has its origins in the Rhône Valley in France. Interestingly, the main difference between Shiraz and Syrah lies merely in the designation of origin. In the wine regions of the 'New World' like South Africa or Australia, the grape variety is often referred to as Shiraz, while in the wine regions of the 'Old World' like France and Italy, the term Syrah is preferred. These different names also reflect the respective style of the wine.
SHIRAZ AND SYRAH IN SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa, with its warm climate, is an ideal growing area for Shiraz and Syrah. The regions of Paarl and Stellenbosch offer optimal conditions for cultivating these grape varieties. Popular and widespread, the wines from Shiraz and Syrah reflect the diversity and quality of South African viticulture.
SMELL AND TASTE OF THE WINES
Shiraz wines present themselves with a fruity character, marked by cherry and plum aromas. Dark chocolate notes add an extra dimension to these wines.
In contrast, Syrah wines exhibit a leaner and more elegant character. Spicy nuances, including cloves, cinnamon, pepper, forest floor, and leather, give them a distinctive note. Both styles are characterized by complex aromas and a racy character that appeals to connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike.
