Scheu Winery

Weinhof Scheu, run by Klaus Scheu, is a family business located in the Palatinate in Schweigen-Rechtenbach, with a unique cross-border location. Much of the vineyard land extends into the neighboring Alsace region of France. The winery’s philosophy focuses on precise indications of origin and the distinctive character of each terroir, creating wines of the highest quality. Klaus Scheu took over the winery from his father Günter Scheuin 1994. He values meticulous vineyard work and low yields to maximize the concentration and intensity of aromas in the wines.

The terroir at Weinhof Scheu is exceptionally diverse, encompassing soils of yellow and blue clay, limestone, quartz, sandstone, chalk, and slate. These soil types have different exposures and contribute to the wines’ unique character. The vines are up to 50 years old, and varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, as well as Scheurebe and Gewürztraminer, are grown. Great care is taken with craftsmanship in the cellar, where both stainless steel and wooden barrels are used and fermentation proceeds without time pressure. The result is expressive wines that reflect the `terroir` of their plots, even in more challenging vintages.

Weinhof Scheu specializes in Riesling, which accounts for 33% of its vineyard area, and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), which, together with other Burgundy varieties, accounts for 50%. About 80% of the harvest is picked by hand. Around 100,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
