Weingut La Motte
The grapes used for the production of La Motte wines come from both the La Motte estate and other selected farms in the Cape Winelands. Thanks to the great variety of terroirs, the grapes from each region make a unique contribution to the flavor components of La Motte wines. La Motte's Nabot farm in the coastal region of Walker Bay is an organic farm. The unique charm of La Motte's wines arises from the character given to them by special soil types and the moderate climate. This creates growing conditions that favor the best grapes. La Motte's well-equipped winery allows the winemakers to combine tradition with modern science to produce wines known worldwide for their consistency and excellence.
Tasting notes
The Pierneef Shiraz Viognier from the Winery La Motte impresses with its rich and fruity style. The grapes from the Elim region in South Africa show an intense color and a very concentrated aroma.
Aromas of mulberry and spices are in the foreground, while nuances of cedarwood give the finish depth.
This full-bodied red wine is dominated by the variety Shiraz (95%). The small share of the Viognier variety (5%) makes the wine unique. On the palate the Pierneef Shiraz Viognier is soft and silky, with finesse on the finish.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
