Weingut Kanonkop
The Winery Kanonkop has been family-owned for 4 generations and is currently run by the brothers Paul and Johann Krige. The name Kanonkop is derived from a hill (kop) on the Simonsberg above the Winery, from which a cannon (kanon) was fired in the 17th and 18th centuries to announce the arrival of sailing ships in Table Bay. The booming of the cannon was the signal for the local farmers, who were waiting to load their wagons with fresh fruit and vegetables and begin the 50-kilometer journey to the harbor. The first wines labeled Kanonkop were produced in 1973. The beginning of international recognition is largely owed to the unfortunately deceased Paul Sauer, who created the first wines.
Tasting notes
The Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage 2023 is an outstanding red wine that expressively showcases the unique characteristics of the Pinotage grape. This wine comes from the renowned Winery Kanonkop in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
The Kadette Pinotage 2023 already impresses with its deep red color and exudes enticing aromas typical of this native grape variety. On the nose, complex notes of ripe red fruits such as cherries and plums unfold, accompanied by subtle spice and vanilla tones. These aromas are complemented by a light smokiness and a hint of dark Chocolate, giving the wine an alluring depth.
On the palate, the Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage 2022 presents a remarkable fullness and structure. The silky tannins are well integrated and give the wine a pleasant smoothness. The fruity aromas continue and are accompanied by a subtle spicy component. The finish is long-lasting and leaves a lasting impression of fruit and spice.
Grape Variety Pinotage
Pinotage is the flagship of South African viticulture. The grape variety has its origin in South Africa. Pinotage is still grown almost exclusively in South Africa, nearly a hundred years after its creation.
Pinotage shows an incredible diversity. Its styles range from coffee & Chocolate to plum & banana aromas. Thus, Pinotage is a true all-rounder. This is reflected in the increased use of the Pinotage grape in cuvées, blends, and also rosé wines. Even white wines (Blanc-de-Noir) are produced from Pinotage.
The history of Pinotage begins with its creator, Prof. Abraham Izak Perold. After his professorship in 1906, Perold was sent by the government in Cape Town on a mission to search for new grape varieties.
In 1925, Perold successfully crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsaut for the first time, which was then known as Hermitage. This is where the name PINO - TAGE comes from.

Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
