Winery Fryer's Cove
In 1985, an aspiring winemaker studying at Elsenburg Agriculture College spent his vacation in the Strandfontein area and had a dream. He shared it with his (now) parents-in-law, and 14 years later Fryer's Cove was born. The student was Wynand Hamman, and his parents-in-law were Jan and Ponk van Zyl.
The beginning was difficult. The winemakers not only had to contend with the unknown factors of wind and sea, but the area was also prone to drought. Without a reliable water source, the venture could not have started. They investigated the use of the available groundwater, but the salt content was too high, and desalination proved too expensive.
A pipeline from Vredendal - 29.5 km away - was the only solution, and they had to cross three neighboring farms to get there. After the neighbors agreed to the pipeline, Jan built it himself in 1999 with the help of his farm workers. In exchange for their cooperation, the neighbors received water from the pipeline.
A buffer dam was also built on the Laubscher brothers' farm. The Laubscher brothers received shares in exchange for their 10 hectares of land. These 10 hectares gave Fryer's Cove a view of the sea, and the planting of the first three-hectare vineyard began in 1999.
Tasting notes
The Chenin Blanc 2022 from Fryer's Cove Winery is a characteristic white wine from South Africa.
Its straw-yellow color reveals a rich bouquet of white peaches, lemon, nectarine, and a hint of tropical notes.
On the palate, it is fresh, lively, and well-balanced, with a pleasant fruitiness and a refreshing acidity.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
