Winery Under Oaks
Under Oaks is an established Winery in family ownership, located in the picturesque Cape Winelands town of Paarl. Here the Kaapzicht family produces fine boutique wines and offers their guests an unforgettable wine experience. In addition to the wine cellar, the farm also features idyllic accommodation as well as an excellent pizzeria. The estate is a working farm deeply rooted in old South African history dating back to 1695. The first vintage of Under Oaks wine was bottled in 2001. The historic cellar was completely renovated in 2014. A special feature of Under Oaks are the two sons JP and Matt, practically the South African counterpart of Max & Moritz ;-) The so-called "Britz Brothers" are obsessed with livestock farming, ecology, viticulture, and agriculture. The brothers discovered their business acumen early on. At the ages of 12 and 14, they began growing watermelons and supplying them to the fruit market in Cape Town. With their "The Secret" wine range, they entered the wine industry and have since been creating excellent wines together with Winemaker Bertus Fourie without revealing which grape varieties are behind them.
Tasting notes
The Grande Dame 2021 from the Winery Under Oaks is a characterful yet elegant red wine. It matured for 24 months in French oak.
The structure and depth of the Cabernet Sauvignon is rounded off by the juicy and jammy fruit aromas of the Shiraz.
This combination with aging in oak wood, which adds extra spice and complexity, produces a particularly harmonious wine.
In the aroma, the Grande Dame 2021 shows a balanced and complex character, supported by notes of black cherry, Blackberry and violet, complemented by fine spice and a hint of cedarwood.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
