Winery De Grendel

De Grendel means “the bolt” in Dutch. Historically, this farm was the gateway on the route to the inland settlements of Durbanville and Stellenbosch, and had to be opened to cross the Tygerberg, named for the leopard-like spots of vegetation on its steep slopes. The road from Cape Town passed by it because, at the time, it was easier for ox wagons to cross the Tygerberg than the sandy plains of Bellville.
