Pongrácz

The story of Pongrácz Winery is inseparably linked to the life of Desiderius Pongrácz , a Hungarian count who found a new home in South Africa after the Second World War. In the Stellenbosch wine region , he played a key role in shaping South Africa's wine industry from 1973 as chief viticultural adviser to Distillers Corporation. He championed the introduction and cultivation of noble grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir , and revolutionised viticultural practices by advocating the careful selection of high-quality plant material.

Desiderius Pongrácz's vision was to improve the quality and diversity of grape varieties grown in South Africa. His dedication led to the modernisation of viticulture and laid the foundation for the reputation South African wines enjoy today. He recorded his expertise in his seminal work, “Practical Viticulture”.

Pongrácz Winery honours his legacy by dedicating itself to producing sparkling wines using the traditional method, Méthode Cap Classique. These sparkling wines, made primarily from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are a testament to his tireless commitment to quality and innovation in South African winemaking.
