Avondale Wine Estate
Avondale Winery, nestled in the majestic setting of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains, stands as a shining example of sustainable farming. Under the expert guidance of cellar master Corne Kruger , the vineyards are farmed biodynamically in harmony with nature’s rhythms, fostering a deep connection between the soil, the vines and the entire ecosystem.
The winery offers an impressive selection of elegant wines, including the signature Chenin Blanc, expressive Syrah and artfully crafted blends, all reflecting the vitality of this unique Franschhoek-terroir.
Translation missing: en.Tasting notes
Avondale's Qvevri red wine has an intense aroma of ripe red berries, violet blossoms and a hint of white pepper. The clay amphorae lend it a subtle earthy, mineral character that perfectly balances the fruit. On the palate, it is lively, fresh and elegant, with fine natural acidity that carries the fruit aromas. The tannins are soft, giving the wine structure without heaviness. The finish is spicy and slightly salty.
Composition of this cuvée
40% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 25% Mourvedre

Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre
This cuvée brings together red and dark berry fruit with pepper, herbs and earthy spice. Grenache often contributes juicy fruit, warmth and body, while Syrah and Mourvèdre generally add colour, tannin and spicy depth. Syrah can also bring freshness and vibrant acidity; Mourvèdre often adds a firm structure and savoury notes. Together, they make a typically full-bodied red wine, with a balance of fruit, acidity and tannin that depends on the site and ageing.
The blend is common in, among other places, the southern Rhône, other parts of southern France and South Africa. The style ranges from juicy and approachable to dense and structured. In the glass, it often shows a deep ruby red colour, sometimes with violet hues. Leather and spice notes can emerge with age. It pairs well with quickly seared or braised meat, as well as hearty vegetable dishes.
