Idiom

Idiom has embodied the passion of the Bottega family for exquisite wines in the wine region Stellenbosch, South Africa. Picturesquely located on the upper slopes of the Helderberg, the Winery enjoys breathtaking views of False Bay and benefits from unique microclimates shaped by the nearby ocean and the surrounding mountains. The philosophy of Idiom is to make optimal use of the terroir and bring out the characteristics of each grape variety perfectly.

Under the leadership of cellarmaster Roberto Bottega an impressive range of grape varieties is cultivated. In addition to classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the portfolio also includes Pinotage and Shiraz . This diversity is reflected in experimental wines that are still strongly rooted in the terroir, which are regularly celebrated for their character and origin.

Idiom is synonymous with innovative winemaking, with every drop reflecting the dedication and expertise of the team of Roberto Bottega . The wines are a reflection of the highest winemaking craft and stand for South Africa's rich tradition of winegrowing.

                                             Grape Variety Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is one of the most well-known white wine grape varieties worldwide. Originally native to France as Pinot Gris, the variety became especially popular in northern Italy and shaped its fresh, straightforward style there. Today, Pinot Grigio is widespread in many wine regions and impresses with its versatility from light aperitif wines to more structured food companions.

In South Africa, Pinot Grigio shows a clear, fruit-forward expression. Many hours of sunshine and maritime influence keep the grapes healthy while also providing sufficient freshness. On limestone and granite soils, precise, elegant wines with fine texture and good tension are produced.

Typical aromas range from citrus and green apples to white pear, floral notes, and a subtle, mineral character. Depending on the Aged, Pinot Grigio can be puristic in stainless steel tanks with cool fruit and crisp acidity or gain creaminess through short barrel aging, which can add hints of vanilla, almonds, and fine caramel. While very ripe, broad styles were occasionally found in the past, many producers today prefer a more balanced interpretation focusing on freshness, varietal expression, and elegance.
