Ten years after its last harvest, La Providence in Franschhoek returns with a true first: This rare “Virgin Vintage” comes from the first harvest of a plot measuring just 1.1 hectares. Cool nights and a rainy winter gave the hand-picked grapes ideal ripeness—a remarkably focused and elegant Shiraz that reaches its full potential in magnum. In the glass, it shines dark red with bluish reflections, while aromas of juicy ripe plum and freshly crushed black pepper immediately rise from the glass. Aged for 16 months in French oak, it gains fine notes of dark Chocolate, roasted coffee and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, spontaneous fermentation and 25 percent whole-bunch inclusion give the wine a wonderfully grippy texture. With just 0.4 grams of residual sugar, it remains bone dry, while its 14% alcohol is balanced by taut freshness and 5.2 grams of acidity. Silky, perfectly integrated tannins carry its full body into a powerful, deep finish.
