The story of the Winery Villa Maria Estate began in 1961, when George Fistonich at the age of 21 began making wine on just two hectares of land in Mangere, Auckland. Originally planted by his parents, Andrew and Mandica Fistonich, the Dalmatian immigrants, the vines became the driving force behind the winery. In particular, in Marlborough, Villa Maria established itself from the late 1980s as a leading producer of the famous grape variety Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa. The philosophy focuses on producing a wide range of highly acclaimed wines, from fruit-forward new discoveries to complex, age-worthy bottles. The wines are distinguished by their liveliness, character, and delicious taste.

Villa Maria is the largest landowner in the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District and owns about one third of the official vineyard area. From the very beginning, the winery has been a pioneer in sustainability: as early as 1995, it received BioGro organic certification as the first major New Zealand winery, and it has been certified as Toitu carbonreduce since 2010.
