Dear wine friends,
In one of our recent newsletters, we asked you for tips and ideas for new wineries and hidden wine treasures.
Through a little insider tip from one of our blog readers, we ventured into the farthest corner of Franschhoek and discovered a hidden gem among the wineries:
My Wine.
It is probably difficult to describe My Wyn as a “real” Winery – it neither owns its own vines nor has a large tasting room, as one knows from the more well-known tourist wineries.
The tasting is easily arranged by phone – you will then be warmly welcomed by the winemaker Jacoline Haasbroek.
Once you have made it up the bumpy track to the Winery, an incredible view down into the valley of the wine region awaits you.
Jacoline made her first wine in 2001 – back then it was no more than 3 barrels or 900 bottles along with 400 bottles of sparkling wine for personal consumption. Today, she already has a wider range of wines – 14 in total.
“It's like buying shoes for women. You can never have enough shoes – otherwise, I would get bored in the long run.”
- JACOLINE HAASBROEK
That's why Jacoline never produces more than 3 barrels of one variety. Her annual production is therefore only around 5000 bottles – all "hand-made" and filled by hand.
After we finish the cellar tour, we'll head to the veranda for the tasting.
Jacoline skillfully guides us through her range. Since it would be a bit too elaborate to present all the wines here, we would like to mention our favorite: the Cabernet Franc from 2013.
In South Africa, there are very few purebred Cabernet Francs, and these are not always a hit. Jacoline’s Cabernet Franc was naturally fermented for 21 days in an open 500-liter barrel and aged for 24 months in French oak. The grapes themselves come from a Burgundy farm in Franschhoek and were harvested at around 25°C.
The Cabernet Franc is a true rarity with a production quantity of only 3 barrels, and with its unfiltered bottling, it is rounder and finer than the style of Cabernet Sauvignon that one usually knows.
But now to the essentials.
The wine impresses with its intense aromas of dark fruits, as well as an earthy note. The long-lasting finish emphasizes the quality of the wine – a great wine for red meat or rich, creamy pasta dishes.
My Wyn is truly a beautiful alternative to the large and yet very touristy wineries. Because the Winery takes you back to the origins of winemaking and shows what it's really about: the wine.
We can only strongly recommend anyone currently traveling in the Franschhoek region to pay a visit to Jacoline's wine cellar and relax with a glass of wine while enjoying the breathtaking view.
