Boekenhoutskloof became founded in 1776 making it one of the oldest wineries in South Africa. The name comes from the farthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek-Tals and means "Schlucht des Boekenhout" (pronounced: Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is a native Cape beech tree that is highly valued for furniture making.In 1993 that was Winery sold to introduce a new vineyard planting program that now Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier includes.

Winemaker Marc Kent produces one of the best wines in South Africa with his red wine "The Chocolate Block" as a renowned Syrah specialist. Originally, the French-style cuvée is modeled after the northern Rhône. However, the wine brings with it the typical local fruitiness and richness.
However, not too many bottles of this outstanding wine are available. This is because Boekenhoutskloof produces its wine from limited vines in various vineyards that are managed with significantly reduced yields.
Origin of The Chocolate Blocks
The Syrah is produced by the Winery from the hot and dry Malmesbury in Swartland, north of Cape Town. The grape variety is one of the oldest of its kind in South Africa.
The Cinsaut, in turn, originates from old Bush Vines in Wellington. The winery harvests the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon & Viognier in Franschhoek itself in a very gentle manner.
Each of the grape varieties contributes its share to the special fascination of The Chocolate Block wine.
The composition of this wine is optimized from vintage to vintage to best reflect the climate and the old, characterful vines that make up a significant part of the charm and personality of the wine.
The Chocolate Block flavor profile
The 2020 vintage was preceded by a very dry growing season, which led to a record low harvest yield. This resulted in smaller, more concentrated berries. These conditions were encouraging for the production of wines with great complexity. In Swartland, moderate temperatures prevailed in December 2020 and January 2020. The harvest window for The Chocolate Block was a period of only two weeks. According to initial reports, 2021 is another good vintage for Syrah with pronounced aromas of black fruits and a classic hint of black olives.
The predominant variety Syrah (71%) shows a beautiful inky color in the glass. The Grenache vineyards are well established, and this variety is undoubtedly the bright, fragrant star of the blend, reminiscent of an old Châteauneuf-du-Pape-like charm.
The old Cinsaut grape variety remains an unannounced jewel that effortlessly holds the wine together and establishes a refined elegance.
Cabernet Sauvignon is essential with only eight percent share to give the cuvée structure and grip.
Expansion: The Chocolate Block
The grape varieties Syrah and Cinsaut matured in a combination of 2,500-liter barrels made of French oak and barrique barrels. The Grenache was aged in 600-liter barrels. Cabernet Sauvignon is the only component of the cuvée that was aged in new barriques made of French oak. The aging period ranged between 13 and 16 months, depending on the component and the vineyard plot. 2414 barrique barrels were selected for the 2019 vintage.
The Chocolate Block in the glass
The "The Chocolate Block" presents itself in a deep ruby red with violet reflections and an almost black garnet-core taste. The wine shows aromas of red berries, dark fruit compote, and violets. On the palate, the wine tastes of red and black berries. The finish is long-lasting, tastes very good, and reminds one of dark nut chocolate.

Eine günstigere und nicht viel aufwendigere Alternative ist, sich den Wein ins deutsche Grenzgebiet liefern zu lassen und die Verzollung selbst vorzunehmen. Du erhältst dann die deutsche MwSt zurück, hast eine Freimenge von 5 Liter pro Person und zahlst 2 CHF Zoll für jeden weiteren Liter.
Zudem liefern wir frachtkostenfrei ab 120€ innerhalb Deutschlands. Des weiteren musst Du Dich nicht mit dem Paketdienst abstimmen und sicherstellen, dass jemand da ist, sobald die Lieferung eintrifft.
Wenn Du keine Möglichkeit hast, die Ware zu Freunden ins Grenzgebiet liefern zu lassen, dann können wir den Wein in einen UPS Access Point in Grenznähe nahe zu Deinem Wohnort liefern lassen. Du brauchst Dich nicht zu registrieren, es entstehen keine weiteren Kosten und Du musst nur Deine Weine innerhalb eines gewissen Zeitrahmens dort abholen.
Ferner gibt es verschiedene Anbieter von Paketshops, von denen Du Dein Paket gegen eine kleine Gebühr abholen lassen kannst, z.B.
