Kanonkop

The Winery Kanonkop is considered one of the most renowned wineries in South Africa and is often referred to as the country’s "First Growth". It is particularly known for its outstanding Pinotage-wines as well as elegant blends in the Bordeaux style. The name Kanonkop is derived from a cannon on Simonsberg, which was once used to signal ships arriving in Table Bay.

The winery located in Stellenbosch has made a name for itself internationally and stands for wines of high quality and aging potential. Typical are harmonious cuvées made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

With a deep commitment to tradition and terroir-driven cultivation, Kanonkop produces wines that reflect the unique characteristics of their origin. Wine lovers value the consistency and unmistakable style that make Kanonkop it a staple in the wine world.

Kadette Pinotage 2023

Pinotage is the flagship of South African viticulture. The grape variety has its origin in South Africa. Pinotage is still grown almost exclusively in South Africa, nearly a hundred years after its creation.

Pinotage shows an incredible diversity. Its styles range from coffee & Chocolate to plum & banana aromas. Thus, Pinotage is a true all-rounder. This is reflected in the increased use of the Pinotage grape in cuvées, blends, and also rosé wines. Even white wines (Blanc-de-Noir) are produced from Pinotage.

The history of Pinotage begins with its creator, Prof. Abraham Izak Perold. After his professorship in 1906, Perold was sent by the government in Cape Town on a mission to search for new grape varieties.

In 1925, Perold successfully crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsaut for the first time, which was then known as Hermitage. This is where the name PINO - TAGE comes from.
