Winery Vergelegen
The Winery Vergelegen is a renowned Winery in South Africa and is one of the best-known and oldest Wineries in the Stellenbosch region. It is located about 40 kilometers east of Cape Town and stretches over a picturesque landscape with gentle hills and lush vineyards. The history of Vergelegen dates back to the 17th century when it was founded by Dutch settlers. Over time, the Winery changed owners several times, but since the late 20th century it has been owned by the Anglo American Corporation, which places great value on preserving the historic buildings and further developing wine production. The climate in Stellenbosch is ideal for viticulture, and Vergelegen benefits from the cool sea breezes of the Atlantic and the warm sunshine, which provide optimal conditions for growing quality vines. The vineyards are mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, and Chardonnay, and the Winemakers of Vergelegen produce a variety of award-winning wines characterized by their elegance, complexity, and balance.
Tasting notes
This masterful Vergelegen V combines complex aromas of blackcurrants, cedar wood, blackberries and exotic spices. With a maturation of 18 months in new French barriques and a further 48 months in the bottle, the wine presents itself in full diversity and gentleness.
The blackcurrants give the wine an enticing freshness, while the cedar wood adds a subtle, elegant structure. The aromas of blackberries provide a seductive sweetness that harmonizes wonderfully with the exotic spices that give the blend a mysterious note.
In the glass, the blend is a deep, enticing red and reveals a fascinating complexity that caresses the senses. The 18-month aging in French barriques gives the wine additional sophistication and depth, while the further bottle aging of 48 months develops its characteristics to full perfection.
Grape Variety
Chenin Blanc is a widely cultivated, old white wine grape variety that has been grown in France (in Anjou – Touraine) since the 9th century. Compared to other white wine grape varieties, this variety is very productive. This leads to a very high quality of the white wine when reduced on the vine.
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is the most widely grown white wine grape variety. The reason for this is primarily the very high diversity. For example, there are "wild-growing" vines (so-called Bush Vines) that are usually not irrigated. For this reason, the vines penetrate very deep into the ground with their roots to reach water. These Chenin Blancs therefore have a stronger depth and complexity.
The grape variety can also be aged very fresh and fruity in stainless steel tanks, developing into a very nice summer wine. Through the Aged in oak barrels, one obtains very complex and full-bodied white wines. The aromas of Chenin Blanc wines range from peach, apricot, and tropical fruits to honey and melon.
