The story of Weingut Pongrácz is inseparably connected with the life of Desiderius Pongrácz , a Hungarian count who found a new home in South Africa after the Second World War. In the Stellenbosch wine region, he played a key role in shaping South Africa's wine industry from 1973 onwards as the Chief Viticulture Consultant for the Distillers Corporation. He championed the introduction and spread of fine grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and revolutionized viticulture practices by calling for careful selection of high-quality planting material.

Desiderius Pongrácz's vision was to improve the quality and diversity of grape varieties grown in South Africa. His commitment drove the modernization of winegrowing and helped lay the foundation for the reputation of today's South African wines. He documented his expertise in his standard work, „Practical Viticulture“.

Weingut Pongrácz honors his legacy by dedicating itself to producing sparkling wines using the traditional method, the Méthode Cap Classique. These sparkling wines, composed mainly of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are a testament to his tireless dedication to quality and innovation in South African winemaking.
