Winery Idiom

Idiom is a family-run Winery at Sir Lowry’s Pass in the Helderberg region near Somerset West.
The own Da Capo vineyards were established in 1999 and combine South African terroir
with Italian heritage. In addition to classic Bordeaux varieties, Sangiovese,
Barbera and Nebbiolo thrive here.

The modern Tasting Centre with panoramic views over False Bay and the restaurant make Idiom a place
where wine, architecture and nature come together. The collection ranges from elegant cuvées to
characterful single varieties and reflects granite-influenced soils as well as the cool sea breeze.

Grape Variety Barbera

Barbera originates from Piedmont and is known for its juicy fruit and lively acidity. Typical aromas are red cherry, plum, violet, and a hint of spice. On the palate, Barbera is medium-bodied with low to moderate tannin structure, making it particularly inviting to drink. In stainless steel tanks, it shows clear freshness and precise fruit; with short barrel aging, fine notes of cedarwood, cocoa, and more depth are added. In Stellenbosch, Barbera combines ripe red fruit with good tension and a long, juicy finish. Versatile pairing with Italian cuisine, ragù, Pizza Funghi, grilled meat, and mushroom dishes.
