Sangiovese grape variety
Sangiovese comes from Tuscany and is the defining grape behind Chianti and Brunello. Typical aromas include redcurrant, sour cherry, plum, dried herbs, tomato leaf and a hint of leather. On the palate, Sangiovese is medium-bodied, with lively, often sweet-and-sour tension, fine-grained tannins and clear, well-structured acidity. Stainless steel highlights its precise fruit and spice; short to medium oak ageing adds subtle notes of vanilla and cedar, as well as depth, without obscuring its freshness. In Stellenbosch, Sangiovese combines ripe red fruit with granitic minerality and excellent balance. It pairs well with a variety of Italian dishes, including tomato pasta, pizza, Bistecca alla Fiorentina, porchetta, mushroom risotto and aged Pecorino.
